Can I use OTC treatments to help manage disease symptoms?

There are many OTC treatments and other products that can reduce the symptoms of your condition. They often only reduce symptoms in the short term and they do not fix the cause of the disease. For osteoarthritis, OTC treatments can be very effective in managing pain. But people with autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, may find more relief with prescription medicine.

What are the benefits and risks of using OTC medicines?

There are many benefits to OTC treatments:

  • OTC treatments are helpful to manage occasional symptoms (such as flares) because they are easy to buy at pharmacies, grocery stores, or convenience stores without a prescription from your doctor.
  • They can also be less expensive than prescription medicine.
