SCIENTISTS SPOTLIGHT

1999-2000
The following is a description of a study from one of the many researchers that our organization has funded.

Sanshiro Hashimoto, M.D.
Scripps Research Institute
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the progressive erosion of cartilage, believed to be caused by an increased number of cartilage cells undergoing “cell death” without adequate regeneration of new cells. Dr. Hashimoto’s study examined the mechanism of cell death in OA and whether the inhibition of cell death can be pursued as a novel approach to ameliorate cartilage degeneration.
