Uphill Kickboxing Helps in the Fight To Cure Arthritis

Ottawa’s inaugural Uphill Kickboxing to Cure Arthritis took place on October 25, 2015. Fitness and kickboxing instructor Jordan Rogers approached the Arthritis National Research Foundation to show his support for Racing For A Cure team member, fellow Ottawa resident and more importantly, his friend Steve Ratte. You may remember Steve from our post covering his Spartan exploits while battling Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Thanks to Jordan’s efforts, Uphill Kickboxing saw people of all skill and fitness levels come out to get fit and support arthritis research! Some people were practicing their skills, others were battling the steep hill and plenty of others were learning on the go all in the name of helping raise awareness and funds to find a cure.

The dedicated group of supporters had great energy as they were led by Spartan Steve himself, battling Ankylosing Spondylitis and the hill with him the whole way. “It was fun to literally take the fight to my arthritis,” said Steve, “To have all of these people come out to Uphill Kickboxing in support me and arthritis research was very motivating.”

Jordan took everyone through basic punches and kicks. Then eventually leading to combinations and very basic light defense as they traveled up the hill. With so much happening before the participants knew it they were up the hill and down the hill over 10 times!

“Overall it was a very successful first event,” says Jordan, “I plan to do this event every year and next year at the very least I want to quadruple the participation and the money we raise!”

The support and camaraderie fostered by this event is very much appreciated by everyone at the Arthritis National Research Foundation. ANRF looks forward to seeing Uphill Kickboxing grow in numbers and support in the FIGHT to cure arthritis!
